Hints and tips

A little care in packing and storing your things will keep them in good condition and will save you money by allowing you to make the best of the space. Storing belongings that are not properly packed could lead to their deterioration over time.

Choosing your room

Take time to choose the best size room – our staff will be happy to assist. We strongly recommend that you visit to see for yourself and reserve the room you need.

Subject to availability you are under no obligation to use the room you reserve – you can change it for a smaller or larger room at any time.

Remember to try to make the best use of the available height to ensure that you do not use a room that is bigger and less economic.

If you plan to move in stages consider using two smaller rooms with one that can be emptied earlier than the other leading to significant savings.

Most people are surprised by how little space they really need in a specialist storage centre where the space is designed to be filled to an optimum with minimum fuss.

Packing

Use uniform size boxes for easy stacking. Be sure your boxes are strong enough and fill each one but do not overfill. Partially filled boxes should not be stacked as they will not be strong enough over time.

  • List contents of boxes on cards (instead of on each box). Number the boxes to match card numbers. Number the boxes on all sides to make it easy to find them. Keep cards in a safe convenient place for use when unpacking. This way you will not need to look through all boxes to find what you are looking for.
  • Cardboard boxes can be single, double, triple or even quadruple ply - use thicker boxes for heavier items and do not make any box over heavy - It is better and quicker to use several smaller boxes than a few larger ones - your things will be better protected and storing and moving will be easier and quicker.
  • Boxes should be taped in two directions across the bottom and running up the side to ensure maximum strength.
  • Dishes and glasses should be wrapped in paper and packed in sturdy boxes. Stack them on top.
  • Pictures and mirrors should be wrapped in cardboard, marked "Fragile" and stacked on end.
  • Books should be laid horizontally and their boxes should not be stored on the ground.
  • Furniture with drawers can be utilized as storage places for pictures, knick-knacks, china, silverware, small items, etc. Wrap them in tablecloths, towels, or blankets to prevent breakage.
  • Larger appliances make excellent "packing cases" for blankets, towels, table clothes, and clothes.
  • Shovels, hoes, rakes, and hoses can be stored together in empty dustbins. Stack extra cans inside one another.
  • Place crockery on a towel in a box surrounded by wrapping paper with another towel on top.
  • Use towels and blankets to fill gaps in other storage boxes and to protect fragile items.
  • When stacking chairs place a bubble wrap sheet between each one.
  • Cover stuffed furniture with plastic to protect against dust.
  • Leave out cleaning products and hoover / mop until the end.
